18 new rules for 2018

I’ve seen lots of people doing “17 things I learned in 2017” posts, so I thought I’d do something a little different. These are my 18 new rules for 2018. I can’t promise I’ll stick to them, but it’s worth the shot.

1. it’s not worth it, if it doesn’t make you happy.

I’ve been getting better at learning to make decisions based on what makes me happy, but it’s still tricky. Sometimes you get lured into doing something without really thinking it through, and end up feeling stuck or trapped. I want to avoid this at all cause this year.

2. just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

Saying no shouldn’t be so hard. When you just don’t feel like doing a certain thing, don’t do it. It’s ok to put yourself first sometimes. Even though you can go out and have dinner with that one friend, doesn’t mean you have to. If you just want to stay in, be lazy and read a book, that’s fine. Me-time is so important.

3. it’s ok to do things by yourself.

Again, the me-time topic. There’s really no shame in doing things by yourself. From going to the movies, to having a coffee or going to the gym, to traveling by yourself. Don’t let anyone stop you or tell you that you can’t or shouldn’t. And definitely don’t feel embarrassed. You’ll learn to appreciate your own presence. Trust me, it’s fun.

4. age is just a number.

This year I’m turning 20. Even writing that pains me and totally freaks me out. I feel like I have no more time to waste, since it’s flying by so damn fast. When I was little, people who were 20 years old seemed to have their live together and knew what they were doing. Truth is, nobody knows what the hell they’re doing and somehow I find comfort in that. After all, you’re only as old as you feel.

5. Great things take time.

If there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s being impatient. Waiting is just not for me, at all. So, this year’s about learning and accepting that everything happens at it’s own pace. Good things may only take a day, but great things take time.

6. your way isn’t always the right way, even though you think it is.

Everyone has their own truths, that doesn’t mean yours is right or wrong. You just need to accept that at certain moments, you have to give in and let go of your way. It might not always be the right one. Learning from other people’s insights is something that will really help you grow. And who knows, maybe not having your way all the time might actually work out for the best.

7. comparison will kill you.

Comparison truly is the thief of joy. You can get so caught up in what other’s lives are like or what they look like these days and social media is for a big part to judge for that. Being you is and should be enough. You’re the only one who has to live with yourself, so you better learn to love who you are. Self love is the best kind of love.

8. there’s no reason not to follow your heart.

There just simply isn’t. You have nothing to lose by going after what you really want and stand for.

9. you’ll never know, if you never try.

You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. So why don’t you just give it a try, even if you fail. Who cares if you fail? Regretting something you didn’t do and always wondering “what if?” is worse than the fear of trying something new. Take the risk, or lose the chance.

10. you don’t have to do what everyone else is doing.

You do you.

11. You will figure it out.

You don’t have to have your life all figured out by the time you’re 20. Your twenties are your selfish years. You’ll learn what you like/dislike/aspire/,… just take a deep breath and give it some time.

12. Take the opportunity, just do it.

What’s holding you back anyway? Take all opportunities, no matter the price. I never want to look back at my life and regret not taking an opportunity because I was scared it would be difficult or I would fail.

13. Don’t snooze the alarm.

I want to learn to be a morning person -which I’m absolutely not atm- I’m a pro at putting an early alarm and then snoozing it ten times. I want to be able to jump out of bed and be ready for the day. Waking up early also means more time in a day, which I’m desperately in need of. On the other hand a downside would be going to sleep earlier, another thing I’m not too great at.

14. it’s ok to change your mind.

My previous post describes this one perfectly.

15. Don’t buy the shoes.

I need to learn how to save. Since I’m an online shopping fanatic, I’ve struggled a lot with this. Quality over quantity, that’s the way to go in 2018. That way I’ll be able to finally save some money in the real long term -not to go on a trip in 6 months-

16. You are the only person who holds you back.

Nobody’s stopping you. If you want to do something, do it regardless of what people might think or say. Do it, and do it for you. I need to learn that going out of my comfort zone isn’t as scary as it sounds and being silly is ok. Don’t be afraid of failing, be afraid of not trying.

17. Water is the cure for everything.

Drinking enough water and staying hydrated is beneficial on so many levels. It’s good for your skin, mood, health,… I need to make it a habit, because right now it’s certainly something I tend to forget about.

18. The best is yet to come.

Don’t worry about every little thing. Don’t overthink situations. Enjoy and be present in each moment. Find out what makes you happy and do a lot of it. But if you’re having a bad day, its not the end of the world. It’s ok to feel what you’re feeling, just don’t dwell on it. Always remember, the best is yet to come.
